Arts Exploration at Hope – Interns weeks 1-2

theaterinterns1What a great start to our third annual Art Exploration Program at Hope Academy! During these first two weeks our Artist Mentors (Betsy Mills – dance, Corey Mills – Theater, Sarah Albinson – visual art, Becca Ulasich – photography, and Mark Collier – music) have been working with their high school interns. The interns are part of Hope Academy’s “Hope Works” internship program that provides real life workplace experience for students, and at Hope’s request, our program incorporates an “artist’s component” for students to choose from. Interns go through an application process indicating their preferred artistic discipline from the five class choices, and are selected by Hope teachers and staff based on interests, abilities, and academic history. The interns are also paid a small stipend for their work. These first two weeks focus on 10 high school interns (2 per Artist Mentor) who go to their Artist Mentor’s studios or workplace where they are guided through our program curriculum in preparation to be classroom assistants during weeks 3-4, but also experience and participate in professional projects (ie. recording sessions, exhibit preparation, photo shoots, performance rehearsals, etc.).

On Monday June 24 we begin two weeks of classes with about 60 Hope middle school students who will explore their own unique value and creativity in their chosen artistic discipline. Then, on Tuesday July 2nd at 7pm, there will be a Community Showcase Celebration at Hope where the students present their creative work. We’d love to have you join us for this special occasion! Hope is located at 2300 Chicago Ave. in Minneapolis. Directions here: http://goo.gl/maps/FJqcu
