Mathare Art Camp 2024

By Seth Luchemos – Director and Artist Mentor

The theme for our Art Camp at Mathare Community Outreach (MCO) was Discovering and Unleashing our Creative Light.

During Art Week at MCO, the Music class was exciting and interesting, recording six original songs composed by the students themselves. They also picked up some keyboard skills, learning to play a few popular tunes.

In Photography, students were introduced to the art of capturing moments with a focus on various techniques, including advertising photography. They honed their skills by taking creative shots that showcased their growing talent.

The Video class ventured into the community, capturing the vibrant life of small businesses in Mathare. They also documented the week’s events at the art camp, providing a dynamic visual record of the experience.

Baking, a new addition to our camp lineup, proved to be a delicious success. Students explored the basics of pastry-making and even baked a cake that took center stage at the final day showcase.

Dance class brought energy and rhythm to the camp as students learned a fusion of African and modern dance styles, resulting in a powerful and fun performance.

In Visual Arts, creativity flowed freely as students delved into pencil drawing and canvas painting, producing impressive works of art.

The Fashion and Design class was a burst of creativity, with students diving into various arts and crafts. They crafted beautiful flower vases and decorated sisal buckets with African beads, turning them into stunning pieces for home decoration.

The week culminated in a showcase where parents, friends, and the community gathered to celebrate the students’ hard work and creativity. It was a memorable week filled with learning, laughter, and artistic expression, leaving everyone excited for what’s to come. Thank you to everyone who supports the work of Inverted Arts for creating and enabling this platform for young artists to discover and unleash their creative light!
