Stephanie’s Story

Stephanie grew up in the Mathare Valley Slum in Kenya. Her father, an architect, passed away when she was a child, so she dreamed of honoring him by pursuing a career in architecture and design. At the age of ten she attended Art Camp and discovered her talent for fashion and design. By the age of sixteen she was an assistant Artist Mentor in fashion class and after graduation from High School Stephanie was awarded a scholarship to study at the Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts. During her training she developed a new dream to launch an Interior Design business called Dalawa Decos. Dalawa means “home” in Swahili and the mission of her new company is to make creative and sustainable home accessories for clients in the Nairobi area. Inverted Arts is thrilled to begin a five-year business partnership with Stephanie and Dalawa Decos beginning January 1st, 2025!

This fall we invite you to invest in Stephanie’s new business and help nurture the dreams of other young people just like her through our Art Camps, Scholarship Programs and Business Partnerships. Our goal is to raise $25,000 through two fundraising events: “Give to the Max” for Minnesotans on November 21st and “Giving Tuesday” for the rest of the US and Canada on December 3rd.  We also have recieved $10,000 in matching grants from generous donors, which means your gift will be doubled!

Together we can help young people unleash their creativity and transform their communities!
