Mathare Art Camp 2019

By Jason and LaVonne Dyer

The ninth annual Mathare Art Camp was held in August and was a wonderful week of creativity and fun! This year all the classes were once again led by Kenyan Artist Mentors who not only taught skills but also encouraged, motivated and inspired their students. A special treat this year was the addition of a dance class! The theme this year was “What’s Right With You?” and students were challenged to see the good in others and themselves rather than focusing on what is wrong. This theme was woven through much of the students’ creations throughout the week. A showcase capped off the week, where students showed off their work. It was an event filled with joy and laughter and included a performance by local gospel artist, Guardian Angel. Thank you to all the partners and sponsors who support the Mathare Art Camp and a special thank you to the artist mentors!

Thank you to all the partners and sponsors who support the Mathare Art Camp and a special thank you to those directly involved in this years’ camp. The students and mentors inspire us year after year with their bravery in sharing not only their talents, but also their stories. They are an important reminder that no matter the environment or circumstances, beauty is everywhere and the world needs to hear voices like those in Mathare.
