Photo Story-Telling Grant from MRAC!

We are excited to announce that we have received a Capital Grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council to purchase DSLR cameras, laptops and accessories to lead a new Inverted Arts “Photo Story-Telling Program.”

This project will serve students from four of our partners: People Serving People, Simpson Housing, Hope Academy, and Columbia Academy. In 2019-202 we will offer a six-week Photo-Storytelling Exploration Program, each with 2 hour sessions, either after school or during summer break, each led by one of Photography Artist Mentors. Program curriculum will follow this basic outline: Who are you? Why are you here? What is a story and why are they told? What does it mean to tell a story well? History of photography. I have a camera on my phone; am I a photographer yet? Purposes of Photography. Finding your niche. What is a camera? Does it matter what kind I use? I Can Fix That: Filters versus basic editing. Sacredness of a single image. Choosing well. The final challenge: Tell me a detailed story in one photo. Once the program is complete, we will print and frame an enlargement of each student’s chosen photo, and they will present them at an exhibit at the partner location. Once all 4 Exploration Programs and Exhibits are done, all students will display their photos at an exhibit at the IA Studios. All photos will be for sale, along with 10 prints and 25 greeting cards for each student, printed by IA. Their photos will also be shared and available for sale on the IA website and social media pages. and all sale proceeds go directly to the student whose work was sold.

We can’t wait to get started!

“This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.”
