MCE Kenya Art Camp

By Seth Luchemos – Art Camp Director

The recent week-long Art Camp at Mathare Children’s Education (MCE) was a vibrant and enriching experience for all participants! The camp offered a diverse range of learning opportunities, including music, dance, visual arts, video and photography, and fashion.

Music: Students explored various musical disciplines, including keyboard playing, song composition, and singing. They also learned to play the ukulele and recorded a class song, which showcased their newly acquired musical skills.

Dance: The dance segment involved learning different routines and techniques. Students enhanced their understanding of movement and rhythm through various dance styles, enriching their overall performance skills.

Visual Arts: In visual arts, students were introduced to diverse drawing and painting techniques. They engaged in crafting activities, creating office pen holders and picture frames using paper and wood, allowing them to apply their artistic skills in practical projects.

Videos and Photography: This class focused on sharpening skills in photography and videography. Students gained hands-on experience in capturing images and footage, and further developed their abilities through photo and video editing on various platforms.

Fashion: The fashion curriculum advanced students’ proficiency with sewing machines and introduced mat making and tie-dye techniques. A key highlight was the challenge for each student to design and sew their own dress, demonstrating their creativity and technical skills. The students were also introduced to modeling skills and techniques.

The Art Camp concluded with a celebratory event where parents and friends were invited to witness and honor the students’ work. The occasion was marked by vibrant displays of talent from the students. Pastor Claris Okeyo enriched the event with inspiring praise and worship music, and Pastor Benson Okeyo provided a powerful sermon and prayer, adding a spiritual dimension to the celebration. Jking, the MCE Director, delivered a sincere vote of thanks, appreciating everyone involved in making the camp a success.

Overall the Art Camp was a remarkable experience that fostered growth and creativity in various artistic disciplines. The collective effort of students, mentors and supporters contributed to a memorable and impactful week, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating future events. The MCE family extends heartfelt gratitude to God, Inverted Arts and Recreation Factory for facilitating this exceptional week of learning and creativity.
